The Violin Maker Book Review:

How does a simple piece of wood become a violin, the king of instruments? Watch and find out as Eugene Drucker, a member of the world–renowned Emerson String Quartet, commissions Sam Zygmuntowicz, a Brooklyn craftsman, to make him a new violin. As he tells this extraordinary story, journalist John Marchese shares the rich lore of this beloved instrument and illuminates an art that has barely changed since the Renaissance. Marchese takes readers from start to finish as Zygmuntowicz builds the violin, from the first selection of the wood, to the cutting of the back and belly, through the carving of the scroll and the fingerboard, to the placement of the sound peg. Though much of the story takes place in the craftsman's museum–like Brooklyn workshop, there are side trips across the river to the rehearsal rooms of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln center, and across the world. Stops on the itinerary include Cremona, Italy, the magical city where Antonio Stradivari (and a few of his contemporaries) achieved a level of violin–making perfection that has endured for centuries, as well as points in France and Germany integral to the history of the violin. A stunning work of narrative nonfiction that's also a finely crafted, loving homage to the instrument that most closely approximates the human voice.

Four Centuries of Violin Making Book Review:

This publication features beautiful colour photographs of 225 fine stringed instruments (violins, violas, cellos and double basses) by more than 75 important violin makers. As the leading auction house for stringed instruments, Sotheby's has amassed one of the most extensive photo archives of antique instruments, and this book illustrates the highlights of their archive. In addition to featuring numerous examples from famous makers such as those of the Amati, Gagliano, Guameri, Guadagnini & Stradivari families, the book also includes important examples from lesser-known makers, such as Gregorio Antoniazzi, Giovanni Maria del Bussetto, Felix Mori Costa & Francesco Emiliani. Tim Ingles, head of Sotheby's Musical Instruments Department, has written a brief biography of each of the 75 featured violin makers, incorporating results from modern research that is shedding new light on the lives and interactions of these historical figures. The introduction by John Dilworth gives an overview of the evolution of violin making from its dawn in the 16th century to its current state.

Masterpieces of Italian Violin Making 1620 1850 Book Review:

This book presents a unique view of the work of the great Italian violin-makers from the 17th to the 19th centuries, based on the collection of The Royal Academy of Music in London. The Academy, founded in 1822, is Britain's senior conservatory and one of the oldest institutions in the world for advanced musical training. Included here are masterpieces by Amati, Cappa, Celoniato, Ceruti, Dalla Costa, Deconet, Gagliano, Grancino, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Landolfi, Pressenda, Rota, Rugeri, Seraphin, Sorsana, Stradivari, Tecchler, and Testore. This revised edition has an updated descriptive text, features 15 extra entries, devotes at least two full-color spreads to each instrument, and is supplemented with a new dendrochronological study. Specially-commissioned photographs display each violin, viola, or cello with large, high-quality illustrations, revealing details of these instruments as never before. The Academy's collection of stringed instruments consists of around 100 violins and a similar combined number of violas and celli, the majority of which were received as gifts over the last century, beginning with the Rutson Bequest in 1906. These working instruments are maintained in fine playing condition and generally are in the hands of young musicians during their time as students or at the outset of their careers. The fine selection presented here underlines the collection's core of masterpiece Italian violins, and for the most part this book includes only those instruments in the purest state of conservation.

English Scottish and Irish Violin Makers A Selection of Classic Articles on the History of the Violin Violin Series Book Review:

First published in 1890, this volume contains a detailed account of the history of the violin, exploring its fascinating history and evolution with reference to notable designers and makers from England, Ireland, and Scotland. This interesting volume was originally written for those who love the violin and those who desire to learn about its history, and it is not to be missed by modern enthusiasts or collectors of vintage literature of this ilk. Also highly recommended for violin collectors and antique instrument dealers. Contents include: “Early Makers and Brescian School”, “The Cremonese School and its Italian Followers”, “German Makers”, “French Makers”, “Dutch, Belgian and Other Foreign Makers”, “English, Scottish and Irish Makers”, “Violin Bow Makers”, “Violin Acoustics”, “Violin Varnish”, “Violin Collecting”, “Ole Bulle's 'Gasparo Da Salo'”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction on the history of the violin.
