The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal Vol 32 Book Review:

Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 32: February to August, 1845 We might go 011 with this statement, but we do not believe that any scientific book has ever been published in America, on which the opinions of the most competent existing authorities have been so fially and favora bly expressed. We fear that Dr. Draper is justified in the observation Ire is said to have made, when the Review was shown him, That it was too bad that the editor of the North American had caused his book to be reviewed by a person so grossly ignorant of the mere elements of che mistry, as to assert the oils and resins consist of carbon and hydrogen only.' It is a well-known fact that the resins are oxides, and most of the oils contain oxygen. Should such an article appear in the London Foreign Quarterly, or in any of those journals which systematically abuse everything that comes from America, we could at once appreciate the motive. But after the highest scientific authorities in London, Paris, Edinburgh, Berlin, Geneva, had spoken of this work so well, and treated it with such consideration. The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal 1842 Vol 26 Classic Reprint Book Review:

Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, 1842, Vol. 26 The perfectly healthy condition of the patient in this case precludes, in our view. The. Opinion that a vitiated state of the blood produced the local disease; and the limitation of this disease to a pediculated attach ment certainly, in my mind, excites the hope that he may escape the fatal result which, without the extirpation, would have inevitably fol lowed. The possibility of a recurrence of the disease would have pre vented my making public this description until the final result had been tested by time. Had not a partial statement appeared, which seemed to me to call for the details l have here furnished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 184: April 7, 1921 Two methods. Have been developed for meas uring metabolism. Direct calorimetry, the di rect measurement of the heat evolved by the absorbed food-stufi's, was elaborated and ap plied to man in the calorimeter of Atwater and Rosa, with further developments by Benedict. An indirect method, a determination of the respiratory exchange, has also been developed by which the measurement of oxygen absorbed or carbon dioxide excreted, or both, can be used to calculate the total heat production. Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 183: November 18, 1920 A survey of medical literature of recent years reveals very little about the surgery of traumatic rupture of the spleen. However, from 1909 to 1914 there are reported thirty-one cases Of ruptured spleens,1 from which one gets an idea of the rarity of such cases in general surgery. The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal Vol 184 Book Review:

Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 184: June 23, 1921 For example, the power expended in the leg which kicks a football across the field must be resisted by an equality of stress somewhere within the structure, and this area of resistance must equalize the stress of all muscles con cerned in the action. If not absorbed in the legitimate joint at the head of the femur and the acetabulum, through the equalized support of all the deep-lying tissues of that articula tion, and the equalized resistance of the fibers of these tissues at their, origin, compensatory action and thereby strain, must be conveyed to the spine. The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal Vol 67 Book Review:

Excerpt from The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 67: August, 1862, to February, 1863 At the battle of Fair Oaks, five of the surgeons from the hospital were detailed for service, where we had an unlimited opportunity for practice in army surgery. There were not surgeons and instruments enough there to meet the demand for operations, and many of the wounded were sent in the cars to the Pamunkey and to Fortress Mon roe, there to suffer capital operations at a late period, which proved nearly always fatal. About ten days before I left the hospital, I was detailed to receive the sick coming from the army in the cars, sending those really sick to the hospital, and the malingerers back to their regiments; not a wry pleasant, but yet a very important and responsible duty.
