Storyteller Guitar Book Review:

Every object around us contains the history of all the people and places that brought it here. But rarely is that history explored. In this book, instead of breaking an object apart to reveal those stories, they are told by building the object a guitar named Storyteller from scratch. The text and illustrations reveal the rich lives of the people, places, and projects that breathed life into it. The stories range from people who were pioneers in landscape restoration to those involved with automobile manufacturing. The places include the high arctic, tropical forests, and vertical cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. The projects include stage plays, laser physics and the establishment of the first Canadian diamond mines. By bringing together these disparate stories in one musical instrument the book makes the argument that art, science, and history are part of everybody’s life.

Guitar Makers Book Review:

The craft tradition of making string instruments goes back to Stradivarius, the 18th-century luthier whose instruments today are very nearly priceless. Kathryn Dudley here takes us on a quest for the Guitar Heroes of the 21st century, the luthiers whose artisanal skills (as opposed computer numerical control technology) produce exquisite one-of-a-kind instruments. But she tracks industrial guitar-making as well as artisanal, starting with the post-WW II golden era of the Martin and Gibson companies on to a second golden era, a result of new modes of information sharing. She has interviewed 100 luthiers and 50 dealers, collectors, musicians, material suppliers, and guitar festival organizers. We see how the advent of disco caused sales of acoustic guitars to plummet in the 1980s, and meet the key individuals who rescued both the craft and the big companies from almost certain demise. In-depth portraits of guitar-makers illuminate the kinds of emotional and tactile engagement these skilled workers have with the wood they shape into a guitar s unique voice. They talk to wood, and listen to what the piece of wood wants to be, how the grain is going to go, they bring wood to life, treating it not as a passive object but as a collaborator in the production process. Along the way, we meet up with consequences of the 1992 law prohibiting sales of Brazilian rosewood, as well as taking tours of the Martin Company museum and factory, and devour with pleasure her portraits of student and apprentice luthiers as well as masters. The interaction between people and things yields a longing to be in perfect synch with sound and with the human bodywhat Dudley calls acoustic desire. No other book has so perceptively shown us the role of human hands in shaping a guitar s unique voice."

Too Much Too Young Book Review:

Too Much Too Young investigates how age and gender have shaped the careers and images of pop music stars, examining the role of youth and youthfulness in pop music through a series of themed case studies. Whiteley begins by investigating the exploitation of child stars such as Brenda Lee and Michael Jackson, offering a psychoanalytic reading of the relationship between child star and oppressive manager, and looks at the current glut of boy- and girl- bands and stars in the mold of Britney Spears to examine the continuing fatal attraction of stardom for adolescents. Whiteley then considers the star images of female singer-songwriters Kate Bush, Tori Amos, and Bjork, whose 'little girl' voices and characterization by the media suggests a girlish feminitity which is often at odds with the intentions of their musical output. She then moves on to explore the rock/pop divide as it affects the image of male performers, considering why male stars usually fall into the category of 'wild boys' such as Kurt Cobain or Jim Morrison, or 'nice boys', like Cliff Richard, The Monkees, and Wham! Whiteley ends by asking what happens to stars who set so much store by manipulations of youthfulness when they begin to age, and points to stars like Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue and Cher to demonstrate that it is possible to achieve iconic pop status even without dying young.

Clapton s Guitar Book Review:

New York Times bestselling author Allen St. John started off looking for the world’s greatest guitar, but what he found instead was the world’s greatest guitar builder. Living and working in Rugby, Virginia (population 7), retired rural mail carrier Wayne Henderson is a true American original, making America's finest instruments using little more than a pile of good wood and a sharp whittling knife. There's a 10-year waiting list for Henderson's heirloom acoustic guitars—and even a musical legend like Eric Clapton must wait his turn. Partly out of self-interest, St. John prods Henderson into finally building Clapton's guitar, and soon we get to pull up a dusty stool and watch this Stradivari in glue-stained blue jeans work his magic. The story that ensues will captivate you with its portrait of a world where craftsmanship counts more than commerce, and time is measured by old jokes, old-time music, and homemade lemon pies shared by good friends.

Guitar Man Book Review:

(Book). If you haven't heard this man's music on the airwaves, there's good reason. To quote the great Jelly Roll Morton, "He can't play his way out of no paper bag." But, if you have an old Gibson, Fender or Martin guitar under your bed, you'd better hide it 'cause the Guitar Man is coming for it with a paper bag full of cash. From Moosejaw to Mobile, "Guitar Man" Michael Indelicato has spent over twenty years and has covered more than a million miles in his search for vintage guitars. He stops at every pawnshop, flea market, and even the occasional garbage dump in hopes of finding yet another of these coveted instruments. And yes, he has bought (and sold) thousands of them including many of the most valuable and iconic guitars in existence. Mr. Indelicato started collecting these rare guitars at age 16; forty years later, he has made a fortune in this pursuit. Along the way, he has put guitars into the hands of many of the world's best known musical artists. Part treasure hunter, part door-to-door salesmen, part historian, these are his stories: the soaring successes, the stinging failures, and the insane coincidences that have befallen a man who gave up a lucrative corporate career to follow his musical muse. Like the strum of an ever-rolling arpeggio, his style of prose has been called "Jack Kerouac meets the American Pickers ."

Rigatoni Book Review:

Sarah Bartlett was an Academy Award-nominated film star, an Emmy-nominated television actress and a Tony-nominated stage performer. She was also awarded her very own Varsity Jacket by the former director of the US Department of Music’s Federal Hip Hop Administration. Appearing in over 20 films (including Hearts of Sorrow, Hearts of Celery; Perkwit’s Secret Bramboráky (the fourth installment of the Blurg movies); and Shadow of the Fish), she also starred on stage in such shows as Howling at the Moon: The Dog Musical; Billiard Balls of Death; and Dreadful About Those Shock Treatments, Eh? The woman was also an accomplished musician who performed guitar and baglama not only with her own group (Zooey’s Lampshade) but also with the Hattiesburg Symphony Orchestra and Industrial Pole Bean Outlet; with the Palm Frond and Banana Spider Symphony Orchestra; and with the ’56 Elvis Quintet at the Memphis in November: From Too Cool to Too Cold Music, Art and Law Practice Festival). There were other sides to Sarah, sides that she preferred people not know much about, sides involving Queen Victoria costumes, drinking way too many sodas at one sitting, and that whole ceramic curry serving bowl (from 2400 BCE) incident, which she knew would greatly upset anthropologists all over the world. Here, for the first time, is the entire story of Sarah Bartlett’s life, including her children, her husband, her boyfriend, her shoes, her Toyota Cadberry, and her dreams (some of them involving picture frames made of cheese; some of them involving the Poky Little Puppy; some of them involving Gloria Swanson wearing a miniskirt, a pair of orange flip-flops and a T-shirt with a picture of Andy Warhol and the phrase “Hey, look, I’m a can of soup” on it; some of them involving cats with lobster claws for legs; and some of them involving copious amounts of Ranch Dressing). The book also includes over 150 illustrations, and some of them actually make sense. If you’re looking for a book that offers the best ratio of cost per laugh, look no further. Further? Farther? Wait, let’s think this out. Uhh, farther has an a in it, and measure has an a in it, so farther relates to distance. So, yeah, further is the right adjective to use. The Seattle Drainpipe Gazette says, “Rigatoni is to books as cat hair is to dogs.” The Farmington Inquirer calls Rigatoni “unobtrusive,” “mildly trapezoidal,” and “looks great under some flowerpots.” And the Tucson Rock Trader says, “If we crowdfund, we can raise enough money to get this author the serious help he so obviously needs. This isn’t a cry for help, this is a sustained scream through a set of Peavey Dark Matter DM 118 Powered PA Subwoofer Speakers.”

Sound Souvenirs Book Review:

In recent decades, the importance of sound for remembering the past and for creating a sense of belonging has been increasingly acknowledged. We keep "sound souvenirs" such as cassette tapes and long play albums in our attics because we want to be able to recreate the music and everyday sounds we once cherished. Artists and ordinary listeners deploy the newest digital audio technologies to recycle past sounds into present tunes. Sound and memory are inextricably intertwined, not just through the commercially exploited nostalgia on oldies radio stations, but through the exchange of valued songs by means of pristine recordings and cultural practices such as collecting, archiving and listing. This book explores several types of cultural practices involving the remembrance and restoration of past sounds. At the same time, it theorizes the cultural meaning of collecting, recycling, reciting, and remembering sound and music.

The Beautiful President is too Proud Book Review:

Once I accidentally broke into her bathroom with a document for the beautiful director, so I had my first chemical interaction with her, which led to the interweaving of love and emotion, and so on and so forth. We broke through the restricted area only to discover that she had an important secret, and that her relationship with the mayor was very complicated.
